The Global Fire Partnership is a collaborative project between The Nature Conservancy (TNC), the World Conservation Union (IUCN), and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The objective of the project is to complete a global assessment of native fire regimes that can be used in decision-making related to biodiversity conservation. A report on the first phase of the project can be downloaded here.
TNC, the Center for Fire Research and Outreach (CFRO), and the Geospatial Imaging and Informatics Facility co-hosted a Global Fire Partnership workshop February 8-10, 2006 on the UC Berkeley campus. The goal of the workshop was to bring together fire ecology and management experts from Canada, Mexico, and the United States to review and refine the first phase of global fire assessment data for the ecoregions across North America. A second workshop was held in Bogor, Indonesia, April 26-28 to review data for South Asia-Australia, and a third workshop was held in Santiago, Chile, July 19-21 to review data for Central and South America. CFRO is helping to refine the assessment methodology, as well developed interactive web-based mapping tools that are currently being refined for broader applications in multiple languages.
